It May be the Disease of Our Time. Garlic May be the Answer!

Metabolic syndrome may be the defining disease of our time. It is the dangerous place where our modern lifestyle that leads to heart disease, diabetes and obesity meets. Garlic may be an important part of the answer.

Metabolic Syndrome is the increasingly common constellation of any three of abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar. People with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

A new double-blind study has explored the possibility that the very versatile garlic could help. The 3 month study gave 90 people with metabolic syndrome either a placebo or 1,600mg of garlic powder each day.

The exciting results showed that garlic significantly improved transit time. Transit time is the time it takes for the food you eat to pass through the gastrointestinal tract. It may seem to have little to do with metabolic syndrome or cardiovascular disease, but gut bacteria and transit time play a role in both.

But garlic did not stop with your gut. It significantly improved lipid accumulation product, a measure of waist circumference and triglycerides with indicates lipid toxicity. Garlic also significantly improved the cardiometabolic index, a predictor of obesity related diseases; the atherogenic index of plasma, a marker of blood lipids and cardiometabolic health; and Castelli risk index, a measure of coronary plaque.

All of these results suggest that supplementing garlic can improve metabolic syndrome and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
