Bacon and Eggs: Why Your Breakfast is Bad for You
Breakfast, they say, is the most imortant meal of the day. So, watch what you eat! Recent research is clearly showing that bacon and eggs increase your risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. . . .
As we have discussed recently in our blog, the World Health Organization has established that eating processed meats, like bacon, is linked to colorectal cancer. In fact, it concluded that each 50g (1.8 ounce) portion of processed meat a day increases your risk of colorectal cancer by a full 18%. WHO has now classified processed meats like bacon as Group 1 carcinogens, meaning that they are carcinogenic to humans.
As for the eggs beside your bacon, Canadian researchers have shown that plaque in the arteries–an important marker of atherosclerosis–significantly increases with the eating of egg yolks. That may not be surprising. But this is: the effect of egg yolk is a startling two thirds that of smoking (Atherosclerosis 2012;224:469-73).
Eggs not only increase your risk of heart disease, but of diabetes too. A huge study of 56,998 people followed men for 20years and women for 11.7 years. Compared to people who never ate eggs, men who ate eggs once a day or more increased their risk of type 2 diabetes by a staggering 58%. Eating 5-6 eggs a week increased the risk by 46% and 2-4 times a week by 18%. Even eating just one egg a week increased the risk by 9%. For women, 2-4 eggs a week increased the risk of diabetes by 19%, 5-6 eggs a week increased the risk by 18% and an egg a day or more increased the risk by 77% (Diabetes Care 2009;32:295-300).
Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day. But if your breakfast includes bacon or eggs, maybe you should move on to lunch!
Recent studies actually suggest that both bacon and eggs are healthy. The notion that saturated fats significantly increases your risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease is based on a popular but fraudulent study from the ’70s that has been debunked. The real culprit is sugar and other carbs!
