Using Seaweed to Lower Cholesterol

Have you ever known a fish to have high cholesterol? Maybe it’s the seaweed! This large study shows that a certain type of seaweed can lower cholesterol.
There are several types of seaweed: red, brown and green. Kombu, wakame and hijiki are all well known brown seaweeds used in cooking in parts of Asia.
This just published meta-analysis included 9 studies of 232 people. It found that brown seaweed significantly lowers total cholesterol and the heart harmful LDL cholesterol. Though it also raised the heart healthy HDL cholesterol, the increase did not reach statistical significance.
This study introduces brown seaweed and brown seaweed extracts as helpful tools in the fight against cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.
