Fertile News for Infertile Men

It’s  been a fertile little while for fertility studies. Though fertility always brings the female partner to mind, the cause of the infertility lies in the man as often as in the woman. So these two studies, which show that both diet and supplements can help men improve the odds, can bring hope to frustrated couples. . . .

The first study looked at a simple dietary change. It asked 117 men either to follow their regular diet for twelve weeks or to add 75g, or about two large handfuls, of walnuts to their daily diet. At the end of the twelve weeks, all of sperm vitality (strength and health), motility (movement) and morphology (structure or shape) were improved (Biol Reprod 2012;87:101:1-8).

The second study gave 114 infertile men a combination of antioxidants and other nutrients for four months. The supplement included vitamin C, selenium, zinc, coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine, B12, folic acid, fructose and citric acid. At the end of the study, sperm motility was significantly improved. More importantly, 15% of their partners had become pregnant (Arch Ital Urol Androl 2012;84:137-40).
