If You’ve Got Colitis, Spirulina May Make Your Life Better

Ulcerative colitis is a common and painful inflammatory bowel disease. A safe, inexpensive, effective way of improving life would be worth its weight in . . . green!
When 73 people with ulcerative colitis were given either a placebo or 1g a day of spirulina for 8 weeks in a double-blind study, the ones who got the spirulina were glad they did. The spirulina significantly reduced the number of sleep disturbances they suffered at night, and it significantly reduced their stress scores. Perhaps because of those two important changes, their quality of life scores also significantly improved.
Spirulina is enjoying a powerful year of research. Studies this year have also shown it to be an important antioxidant that also has power over cholesterol.
