Finally, Safe, Effective Relief for Painful Hands!
These two herbs have repeatedly been shown to help osteoarthritis of the knee. But, not to worry if you have aching hands. This new study shows they help osteoarthritis of the hands too.
Osteoarthritis of the hands is very common. It causes pain, stiffness and limitations on your ability to use your hands, including grip strength. It can have a serious impact on your quality of life.
Curcumin and Boswellia have both been shown to help osteoarthritis. As we explain in Vol 25, No.4 of The Natural Path, they have emerged as two of the best treatments.
Two recent meta-analyses have shown that curcumin is remarkable for osteoarthritis (Phytother Res. 2021 Nov;35(11):5921-5935; Biosci Rep 2021;41(6): BSR20210817). Boswellia has also been shown in a recent meta-analysis to be effective (BMC Complement Med Ther. July 17, 2020;20(1):225). Impressively, recent research has even shown that Boswellia can actually reverse osteoarthritis, increasing the space between the joints and decreasing spurs (Phytother Res. May 2019;33(5):1457- 1468).
If your osteoarthritis is in your hands, then have hope. This new study suggests that a combination of these two powerful herbs can help you too.
This uncontrolled study included 232 people with chronic hand pain. Their average age was 66. They were each given capsules containing 89mg of turmeric extract standardized for 72mg of curcumin, 120mg of Boswellia standardized for 78mg of boswellic acid and a small dose of 72 IU vitamin D. They took 2 pills at breakfast and 2 at dinner for 3 months.
Pain relief was already significant at 6 weeks and got better as the study went along. Both pain scores and the number of painful joints decreased significantly. The greater the pain at the beginning of the study, the greater the benefit of the herbs. Pain intensity decreased by 30% or more in a full 89% of people.
Taking the herbs led to a 64% decrease in the need for NSAIDs and a 79% decrease in use of topical drugs. The number of people needing to reach for some kind of drug significantly dropped from 86.7% at the beginning of the study to 59.6% after taking the herbs.
How do those improvements affect your life? 82.6% were satisfied or very satisfied with the treatment. 11.9% said they were neutral, and only 5.5% were dissatisfied. At the end of the study, 72.5% said they wanted to continue taking the herbs; only 17% did not.
An important advantage for the herbs over conventional treatments for osteoarthritis is that they were very safe.
This study suggests that the combination of curcumin and Boswellia significantly and quickly reduces pain in the hands from osteoarthritis.
