Indigestion is incredibly common, affecting 10-20% of all people. Drugs known as protein pump inhibitors are commonly used, but they have lots of side effects. There’s a safe herb that works just as well.

This new double-blind study gave 151 people with functional dyspepsia either 20mg of the protein pump inhibitor omeprazole or 2g of curcumin a day or both for 28 days. Functional dyspepsia means that there is no known cause for the indigestion, like an ulcer.

There was significant improvement in all three groups on the Severity of Dyspepsia Assessment (SODA) score in pain, non-pain and satisfaction categories. There was no significant difference between groups, meaning that the curcumin works just as well and that there is no benefit to adding the drug. Though the difference was not significant, improvement in satisfaction with the treatment was greater in the curcumin group.

This study is the second one to show that curcumin is as effective as omeprazole while being nonsignificantly superior for patient satisfaction (J Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2022 Feb;37(2):335-341
