Can Pomegranate Juice Really Lower Your Blood Pressure?

Several studies have suggested that drinking pomegranate juice can lower your blood pressure. And at least one small, unblinded

Eight studies, including 574 people, were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. In some of the studies, the people were healthy; in some of them, the people had a variety of cardiovascular issues.

The researchers found that pomegranate juice significantly decreased systolic blood pressure (-5.83 mmHg in studies that lasted less than 12 weeks, annd-4.36 mmHg in studies that were longer than 12 weeks) and diastolic blood pressure (−2.01 mmHg). Diastolic blood pressure was only significantly reduced in studies lasting less than 12 weeks, but the reductions in systolic blood pressure remained in studies of both less than and longer than 12 weeks.

This study shows that drinking pomegranate juice can lower blood pressure—especially systolic blood pressure—by amounts that can actually reduce cardiovascular disease.

The authors concluded that “The present meta-analysis suggests consistent benefits of pomegranate juice consumption on BP. This evidence suggests it may be prudent to include this fruit juice in a heart-healthy diet.”
