Why Drinking Your Water May be Bad for Your Brain
The fluoride that your drinking that is added to your tap water to prevent tooth decay may be causing your brain to decay.
For a long time now, fluoride has been added to the drinking water of many communities. But fluoride is known to cross the placenta (Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol 1986;21(4):213-218). That raises the question of what fluoride does to your unborn baby.
A 2012 systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 studies found that children exposed to fluoride had significantly lower IQ scores (Environ Health Perspect 2012;120(10):1362-1368). The new study looked at what happened to the children of mothers who drank fluoridated water while pregnant.
The study included 512 Canadian mothers and their children. It found that the mother’s exposure to fluoride during pregnancy was associated with lower IQ scores in their children when the children were between 3 and 4 years of age. Though fluoride did not seem to have an adverse effect on girls, boys IQ dropped by a significant 4.49 points.
A recent Mexican study of 213 pregnant women found a 6.3 point drop in IQ scores that affected both boys and girls. It also found more ADHD-like symptoms (Enviromental Heal Perspect 2017;1:1-12).
This new Canadian study raises the serious concern that the fluoride being added to our water “may be associated with neurocognitive deficits” when children are exposed to it during pregnancy.
