Want a Second Opinion?

Mayo clinic second opinion disagrees with initial diagnosis 88% of time

Want a second opinion? Maybe you should.

Researchers at the Mayo clinic compared the initial diagnosis of 286 people with the second opinion they got when referred to the Mayo clinic. The results were concerning. . . .

In a full 21% of cases the original diagnosis was completely changed. In another 66% of cases the original diagnosis was “refined or redefined”. In only 12% of cases did the second opinion agree with and confirm the initial diagnosis.

The lead researcher said that “Knowing that more than 1 out of every 5 referral patients may be completely [and] incorrectly diagnosed is troubling — not only because of the safety risks for these patients prior to correct diagnosis, but also because of the patients we assume are not being referred at all.”
