Cholesterol leads to atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis leads to cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. A vegetarian diet could put a stop to that.

Atherosclerosis is the main cause of cardiovascular disease. The bad LDL cholesterol and the apolipoprotein B that is the major apolipoprotein in LDL cholesterol and triglycerides are important contributors to atherosclerosis.

A new systematic review and meta-analysis of 30 controlled studies, with 2,372 people, compared vegetarian and vegan diets to omnivorous diets to see the effect on blood fats. It included studies published right up to October 2022.

The results were important. Vegetarian diets reduced total cholesterol by 7%. More importantly, vegetarian diets reduced the heart harmful LDL cholesterol by 10% and apolipoprotein B by 14%.

This study shows that choosing to follow a vegetarian diet can reduce your levels of blood lipids that cause atherosclerosis, meaning that you can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
