This Little Known Supplement May Improve Memory in People with Age-Associated Memory Impairment.

There is no effective pharmaceutical treatment for the cognitive decline that comes with old age. But there may be a natural one!

Choline is an important nutrient for brain development and aging. It is also needed to produce acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter for memory. The brain’s uptake of choline decreases with age, and that could contribute to cognitive decline in old age.

A safe, effective way to increase choline is by supplementing citicoline. Previous research has shown citicoline to benefit people with a variety of cognitive impairments and dementias. It has also been shown to improve memory and attention in healthy young people.

This new study set out to see if citicoline could help healthy elderly people with age-associated memory impairment.

The double-blind study gave 99 people either a placebo or 500mg a day of citicoline for 12 weeks.

Citicoline led to statistically greater improvement in episodic memory and, most important, in composite memory. Episodic memory is the ability to remember and recall specific events and their context. Composite memory combines each cognitive test and provides a window into overall memory.

Citicoline is naturally present in humans and is very safe. There were no serious adverse events in the citicoline group.

This is the first double-blind study to establish citicoline as a potential supplement for protecting against the memory loss that comes with aging.
