This surprising study suggests that taking vitamin C supplements while pregnant delivers babies with better mental health.

Pregnant women are more vulnerable to mental health concerns. Intriguing new evidence is suggesting that exposure to mother’s depression, anxiety and stress increases the risk of of the baby having an increased tendency toward sadness and irritability. Worse still, that tendency increases your child’s risk of mental health concerns later in life.

The good news is that a new study of 302 pregnant women has found that simply supplementing vitamin C while pregnant can help.

The study’s results confirmed that maternal distress was significantly associated with infant negative affect, or an elevated tendency toward sadness and irritability. It then found that greater maternal distress was associated with lower vitamin C supplementation, and, finally, that prenatal supplementation of vitamin C significantly lowered the risk of infant negative affect.

This surprising study suggests that supplementing vitamin C while pregnant might improve the odds of your infant being happier and having better mental health later in life.
