Save the Planet with Your Plate

As wildfires spread and the earth records its warmest month ever, a new landmark study shows just how big an impact you can have with what you eat.

The University of Oxford study, published in the journal Nature Food, relied not just on scientific modeling, but looked at the actual diets of 55,500 people in 119 countries and measured their impact on the environment.

What they found is astounding. Vegan diets resulted in 74.9% less land use, 53.6% less water use and 65.7% less loss of biodiversity.

People who eat more than 100g of meat a day—and most meat eaters eat much more than that—contributed 22.5 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per day. Vegetarians contributed just 9 pounds, and vegans contributed only 5.4.

Looking at the 100-year Global Temperature change Potential, the study found that meat eaters were responsible for 3.6 times greater emissions than vegans.
