Safely Improving Mood with PMS

Most women suffer mood swings and psychological symptoms prior to their period. A gentle, safe, effective remedy would be very welcome news. Here it is.

About two-thirds of women experience the mood swings and psychological symptoms of PMS. They are most common in women over twenty and may include depression, anxiety, irritability, anger, and decreased concentration.

Chamomile is a very safe and gentle herb. But that does not stop it from being very powerful. In 2014, for perhaps the first time, chamomile was shown to be so powerful over PMS that it beat the drug mefenamic acid. 100mg of chamomile extract taken 3 times a day for 2 months was just as effective as the drug for the physical symptoms. But it was significantly better than the drug for the emotional symptoms (Complement Ther Clin Pract 2014;20:81-8).

A 2019 systematic review of 8 controlled studies showed that chamomile is effective for PMS (J Pharmacopuncture. 2019 Dec;22(4):204–209).

In this new double-blind study, 118 women were given either a placebo or a 250mg capsule of chamomile every 8 hours from 7 days before menstruation to the start of menstruation.

The improvement in severity of mood symptoms was significantly greater in the chamomile group.

This study adds to the evidence that chamomile is a valuable herb for women experiencing PMS, including being valuable–even more valuable than drugs–for the emotional aspects of PMS.
