Probiotics Help Obesity & Heart Health in Children
Recent research has suggested a role for probiotics in helping fight obesity in adults. Now a new study has suggested that probiotics can also help children fight obesity while helping heart health.
This study was randomized, but not blinded. It included seventy-seven obese children. All the children were put on a calorie reduced diet and a physical activity program, but only half of them were also put on a probitic/prebiotic supplement. The study lasted for one month.
The kids on the probiotics had significantly more weight loss and decreases in body mass index and measures of body fat. They also had significant reductions in oxidative stress. Their total cholesterol and heart harmful LDL cholesterol went down significantly more than in the group that didn’t get the probiotics.
This study was not blinded, but it offers early evidence that probiotics can help with free radical damage, weight loss and cardiovascular health in children struggling with obesity.
