One More Reason to Love Blueberries

Blueberries help metabolic syndrome by improving cholesterol and blood pressure

If you have any three of abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated blood glucose, you have metabolic syndrome. If you have metabolic syndrome, then here’s one more reason to enjoy your blueberries.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 controlled studies has shown that supplementing blueberries, whether as blueberry powder, extract, fruit or juice, significantly lowers total cholesterol and the harmful LDL cholesterol. It also significantly decreases diastolic blood pressure.

That means blueberries may be helpful in treating metabolic syndrome.

Earlier research supports this possibility. When menopausal women supplemented blueberry powder, their systolic and diastolic blood pressure improved significantly. Blueberry has also been shown to significantly lower systolic blood pressure as well as diastolic blood pressure in people whose blood pressure is actually high.

So blueberry is a safe and beneficial food to eat if metabolic syndrome is a possibility for you.
