Not Just for UTIs: Cranberry Fights Prostate Cancer

Cranberry is best known as a highly effective herb for preventing and treating urinary tract infections. But a new study has added a new use. It found that cranberry may also prevent and treat prostate cancer. . . .

This double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 62 men with prostate cancer who were scheduled for radical prostatectomy, a surgical procedure that removes the prostate gland and some of the tissue around it. Half the men received a placebo for at least 21 days prior to the surgery while the other half received 1500mg a day of cranberry powder extract. The men in both groups were in the same stage of cancer, but the men in the cranberry group had significantly higher PSA.

Over the course of the 21 days, PSA levels in the placebo group continued to rise significantly. However, in the cranberry group, PSA levels dropped by a significant 22%.

This study suggests that cranberry may have a role to play in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.
