Not All Weight Loss is Equal
Recent research reveals that not all weight loss is equal. From a health perspective, weight loss in the abdominal area may be the most important kind of weight loss for living a longer, healthier life. Several herbs have been shown lately not only to enhance weight loss, but to specifically target the important abdominal fat. Some of these herbs are exciting new ones that have never been thought of as weight loss herbs, giving us promising new options for weight loss. . . .
Green Tea
One of the best botanicals for weight loss is green tea (Phytomed 2002;9:3-8; Obesity 2007;15:1473-1483; Physiol Behav 2008;93:486-491). And several studies show that green tea is a specialist at specifically reducing abdominal fat (Revue De L’assoc Mondiale de Phytother 1985;1:36- 40; J Nutr 2009;2:264-270).
Coconut Oil
When 116 people with high blood pressure, most of whom had cholesterol problems, were put on a diet or on the same diet plus about 1tbsp of extra virgin coconut oil for 3 months, waist circumference in the coconut oil group shrunk by 2.1cm, which was significantly better than the diet alone group (Nutr Hosp 2015;32:2144-52).
Rosehips
A new herb for weight loss is rosehips. When 32 overweight people were given either a placebo or 100mg of rosehip extract a day for 12 weeks, the ones in the rosehip group had significantly greater decreases in abdominal fat, body mass index and weight (Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes 2015;8:147-56). So, rosehips also targets the crucial abdominal fat.
Cumin
And here’s a brand new use of a very ancient herb. When overweight women were placed on a control diet or the same diet plus 3g of cumin twice a day, the women on the cumin lost significantly more weight and percent body fat. They lost almost 50% more weight than the control group. The cumin group decreased their body fat percentage by 14.64%: almost 3 times the reduction experienced by the control group. Body Mass Index and waist circumference were also reduced significantly more in the cumin group than in the control group (Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice 2014;20:297-301), meaning that cumin, too, reduces abdominal fat. This is a very exciting weight loss study for a herb not usually thought of as a weight loss herb.
