This new study shows that spirulina can safely improve many aspects of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating autoimmune disorder in which inflammation and oxidative stress trigger a CNS immune response that leads to demyelination of the myelin sheath.

MS impairs quality of life because of mobility limitations, chronic fatigue, cognitive decline and sexual dysfunction.

This new triple-blind study gave 64 people with MS either a placebo or 1g of spirulina a day for 12 weeks.

Compared to placebo, spirulina significantly reduced body weight, which is important because that could help modulate metabolic risks, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Spirulina significantly decreased markers of inflammation, while there was no improvement in the placebo group.

Spirulina was significantly better for improving health perception, physical function, limitations on physical roles, energy and sexual function.

The spirulina was very safe, with even fewer people having to stop treatment than in the placebo group.

This study suggests that spirulina can be a safe and affordable addition to MS therapy.
