Back pain is incredibly common. It is one of the leading causes of missed work and disability. Nature offers a safe, simple topical solution.

Low back pain is very common, and it is really common in paramedics and nurses. So, this controlled study set out to see if topical chamomile oil could help paramedics with low back pain.

Chamomile has traditionally been used with success for treating back pain (Mol Med Report. 2010 Nov 1; 3(6):895–901). This blinded study treated paramedics with low back pain with either chamomile oil, placebo or nothing in the lumbar region 3 times a day for 3 weeks.

There was a significant improvement in the intensity of pain and in the pain interfering with daily activities at the end of the first, second and third weeks in the chamomile oil group. At the end of both the first and second week, those improvements were significantly better than in the placebo and control groups. By the end of the third week, there was no significant difference; perhaps because the back pain had subsided by then.

This study supports the traditional use of chamomile for low back pain. Specifically, it demonstrates that the topical application of chamomile oil can significantly improve low back pain.
