New Evidence for Red Clover as a Herb for Menopause

Could that beautiful pink flower growing on your lawn really be a potent enough herb to take on the hot flashes of menopause? That’s what this new meta-analysis set out to see.
Isoflavones are mildly estrogenic flavonoids that have the magical ability to make things right: if your estrogen levels are too high, they help lower them by stealing receptor sites from your body’s own more powerful estrogen. But if your estrogen is low—as in menopause—the mildly estrogenic isoflavones gently raise them. They are most famously found in soy. But they are also abundantly found in red clover.
A just published meta-analysis of 9 controlled studies included women who were experiencing between 2.1 and 11.7 hot flashes a day. The dose of red clover ranged widely from 37.1 mg of isoflavones too 160 mg.
The pooled results showed that red clover isoflavones significantly reduced the frequency of hot flashes compared to placebo.
This is the most solid evidence yet that red clover could provide valuable help for bringing the hot flashes of menopause under control.
