More Magnesium in Your Diet Reduces the Risk of Diabetes

Though the evidence has not yet been conclusive, there is reason to believe that magnesium may be beneficial for diabetes. Supplementing 365mg of magnesium a day has been shown to  improve blood sugar levels in people who are at risk of diabetes (Diabetes Obes Metab 2011;13:281-4), and magnesium has been shown to improve insulin production in elderly type 2 diabetics (Diabetes Care 1989;12:265-69). Now a huge new study has given credibility to the magnesium-diabetes link. . . .

This large systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 studies included 637,922 people. The researchers were evaluating the link between magnesium in the diet and type 2 diabetes. More magnesium in the diet resulted in a 17% reduction in the risk of diabetes. There was a significant dose dependent relationship: every 100mg increase a day of magnesium resulted in an 8-13% decrease in the risk of type 2 diabetes.
