Stinging nettle has long been praised as an excellent female tonic that is good for menopause. But this double-blind test of its reputation may be a first.
This study actually proved the effectiveness of two treatments: nettle and acupuncture. Sixty-eight menopausal women who suffered through at least 20 attacks of hot flashes a week were given either 11 acupuncture and a placebo, 450mg a day of nettle and sham (placebo) acupuncture, both or placebo and sham acupuncture. The study lasted for 7 weeks.
Hot flash scores improved significantly more in both the nettle group and the acupuncture group than in the placebo group. They went down by 20.2 points in the nettle and acupuncture group, by 19 points in the acupuncture group, by 14.6 points but by only 1.6 in the placebo group. There was no significant difference between the nettle group, the acupuncture group and the group that did both: they all worked.
Quality of life scores also improved equally in all 3 groups and all 3 groups improved significantly more than the placebo group.
This study reinforces the evidence for acupuncture as a treatment for the hot flashes of menopause and introduces nettle. So, there’s two more natural things you can do to help.
