Lavender Soothes Postoperative Pain
The beautiful lavender is one of nature’s most soothing and relaxing flowers. There is a long tradition of enjoying its scent to help you relax and fall asleep. A new study has enriched this traditional use by showing that lavender’s soothing properties can also help soothe pain: specifically, in this study, post-operative pain. . . .
The fifty people in this study had just undergone open-heart surgery. Some of them received oxygen through a breathing face mask for fifteen minutes and some of them had 2% lavender essence in an olive oil carrier mixed in with the oxygen.
At each time after the fifteen minute intervention the people were tested—5 minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes—the lavender group had significantly less severe pain.
