The modern world is becoming more and more stressful. The ancient world may have the answer. This new study introduces a new herb for stressed out people.

Holy basil is an ancient herb that features in India’s ancient Ayurvedic system of healing where it is known as “the elixir of life.”

This new study gave 250mg a day of holy basil extract or a placebo to people who had been experiencing stress for more than a month and were having problems sleeping. The double-blind study lasted 8 weeks.

The results show that holy basil helped both stress and sleep. The herb was significantly better than placebo for reducing stress on the Perceived Stress Scale: scores improved by 37% on holy basil versus 19% on placebo. The benefit reached significance by week 6, so stick with it.

When it came to sleep, the results were equally impressive. On the Athens Insomnia Scale, scores improved significantly more on the herb than with the placebo, improving by a significant 48% versus 27% with placebo. The improvement was significantly better by week 8.

Holy basil did not only work, it worked safely. There were no serious adverse events and the frequency of adverse events was the same as with placebo.

This study introduces holy basil as a new and potentially valuable herb for people experiencing stress and poor sleep.
