Sadly, miscarriage is still quite common. A growing body of evidence hints that diet may make a difference.

Estimates suggest that miscarriage may be as common as 1 in 6 pregnancies. There are many causes, but in half of these cases the cause is unknown. Lifestyle changes, like not smoking or drinking, are emerging as possible answers. So is diet.

This meta-analysis of 6 studies looked at mothers’ diets during the peri-conception period: the months just before pregnancy and the first 3 months of pregnancy. They found that a number of dietary choices made a different. But the most important were fruits and vegetables.

Compared to not eating much fruit, women who ate a lot of fruit had a 61% reduction in the risk of having a miscarriage. Eating lots of vegetables reduced the risk by 41%.

A whole food diet made up of healthy foods with lots of antioxidants can reduce the risk by 57%. On the other hand, a diet that features lots of processed foods can increase the risk by 97%.

This new research suggests that eating a healthy diet, with lots of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables, can improve your chances of not having a miscarriage.
