Getting Your Sense of Smell Back after COVID

There are no effective pharmaceutical treatments for long COVID, including for the loss of smell. But research points to a very promising natural treatment that just might bring your sense of smell back.

Long COVID is an all too common problem with no easy solution. The most common symptoms include fatigue, cognitive impairment, headache, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, cough and muscle pain. Another common symptom is impaired or lost smell, known as Post-Covid Olfactory Dysfunction, that can last a very long time.

This systematic review and meta-analysis explored the ability of a combination of two natural supplements, palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and luteolin, to help resolve the loss of smell.

Amongst other powers, PEA has strong immune effects and is powerfully anti-inflammatory. PEA is produced on demand by our body in response to things that produce stress and inflammation. PEA has been shown to balance the inflammatory response of the immune system.

Luteolin is a flavonoid that is found in many fruits and vegetables. Amongst other powers, it is powerfully anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

When the two are put together, they just may be the answer to the loss of smell of long COVID.

In a systematic review of five studies, adding the natural combination to olfactory training was better than olfactory training alone in all five studies.

When three studies were put together in a meta-analysis that included 327 people, adding the PEA-luteolin combo to olfactory training significantly improved recovery of the sense of smell versus olfactory training alone.

This first of its kind systematic review and meta-analysis shows that supplementing the combination of PEA and luteolin significantly improves the loss of smell that commonly comes with long COVID.
