For Metabolic Syndrome, Curcumin Does it All!

curcumin improves metabolic syndrome

In some ways, metabolic syndrome is the product of our modern lifestyle and the defining disease of our time. It is like the confluence where lifestyles that lead to heart disease, diabetes and obesity meet. But there is a herb for whom the research is emerging as fast as this new syndrome is. And it may be part of the answer for this epidemic of our time.

Metabolic Syndrome is the increasingly common constellation of any three of abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar. It now affects a whopping 25% of all adults in the world. Treating it is important in the prevention of diabetes and heart disease.

Curcumin is the major active ingredient in the herb turmeric.  This systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed 7 controlled studies of curcumin and turmeric on metabolic factors in people with metabolic syndrome. Altogether, there were 503 adults included in the analysis.

Curcumin significantly improved fasting blood glucose, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol. It did not significantly alter systolic blood pressure or waist circumference.

The researchers conclude that supplementing curcumin can benefit people with metabolic syndrome: an important finding.

There are several other natural aids for metabolic syndrome, including coffee and green tea, calcium and magnesium, flaxseed, red yeast rice and olive extract, pine bark extract and following a vegetarian diet, including lots of walnuts and avocado.
