For Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar, Celery’s Stalk Just Went Up!

Celery is common. But no more common than blood pressure problems. High blood pressure affects 1.28 billion people in the world. The rate among Canadian adults is 22.6%, but in adults over 80, it soars to more than 70%. In the United States, it affects a whopping 49.4% of adults. Celery can help.
This meta-analysis of 9 controlled studies found that celery safely and significantly improves systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Celery also significantly improves fasting plasma glucose and triglycerides. It did not significantly impact cholesterol.
Looking more carefully at the data, the researchers found that celery seed significantly improves blood pressure, blood sugar and total cholesterol. When only the leaves and stalks were used, only diastolic blood pressure improved significantly.
This finding is not entirely surprising, as the 3-n-butylphthalide found in the seeds is probably the most powerful part of the plant for blood pressure and insulin resistance.
Previous research has shown that celery seed extract significantly improves blood pressure (Phytother Res. 2022 Jul;36(7):2889-2907) and also fasting blood sugar, triglycerides and, this time, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol (Inflammopharmacology. 2022;30(5):1669-84).
This promising research adds to the evidence that celery, and especially celery seed extract, can help the all to common problem of high blood pressure, while also helping high blood sugar.
