Can Ginseng Improve Memory in Alzheimer’s?

Preliminary research has suggested that Panax Ginseng can significantly improve cognitive function in people with Alzheimer’s Disease (Alzheimer Dis Assoc Disord 2008;22:222-6). And now, a new study has added to the evidence. . . .

In the new preliminary study, 14 people with Alzheimer’s were given 4.5g a day of powdered 6 year old Korean red ginseng root for 12 weeks.

There was a significant increase in the Frontal Assessment Battery, which measures frontal lobe function. EEG showed that there was a positive effect on the temporal lobe activity, perhaps indicating enhanced memory function.

Though small and uncontrolled, this study increases the hope found in earlier studies that ginseng can improve cognition and memory in people with Alzheimer’s Disease.
