Boosting Your Brain with Strawberries

Since dementia later in life is so hard to reverse, stopping it in your tracks while your young is a crucial strategy. Surprisingly, strawberries might help.
This new study, overweight men and women with insulin resistance who were experiencing cognitive decline were given either a placebo powder or a strawberry powder for 12 weeks.
The group getting the strawberry had significantly diminished memory interference, consistent with improved executive function. They also had a significant reduction of depression.
This study suggests that strawberry supplementation can reduce the risk of dementia when taken midlife.
This is not the first time that strawberries have shown the potential to improve cognition. An earlier study found that women over 70 who eat more strawberries delay cognitive aging by up to 2.5 years (Ann Neurol 2012;72(1):135-43).
