Better Known for Weight Loss, Garcinia Improves Cholesterol

Garcinia cambogia is best known as a weight loss herb. But this new study stretches its benefits. Garcinia improves, not only body fat, but blood fats.

Garcinia cambogia, or Malabar tamarind, is a fruit that is native to South India. It is the source of hydroxycitric acid, which is well know as a weight loss supplement. But just published research is showing that garcinia is valuable, not just for improving body fat, but for improving blood fats.

The systematic review and meta-analysis included 14 studies of 623 people. It found that garcinia cambogia significantly lowered total cholesterol and triglycerides. It also significantly increased levels of the heart healthy HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol was not significantly affected.

Garcinia cambogia had a more powerful effect when it was taken for longer than 8 weeks.

This meta-analysis suggests that, among its other benefits, garcinia cambogia could improve lipid profiles.
