A Natural Solution for Acute Respiratory Infections

There’s a lot of respiratory tract infections going around. This herb may be a helpful part of the answer.
Acute respiratory infections are everywhere! 90% of them are viral, rendering antibiotics useless. But ivy leaf extract is far from useless.
One of the main symptoms of acute respiratory infections is cough. Ivy leaf has demonstrated expectorant effects by improving mucus excretion. Research has established ivy leaf extract as a powerful herb for coughs. Even for the tough bronchitis, ivy leaf is as potent as the drug ambroxyl (Zeits Allergereinmed 1993), and a combination of ivy and thyme works better and faster than placebo at reducing coughing fits in people with bronchitis (Arzneimittelforschung 2006;56(9):652-60).
In a recent study of children with productive cough, an ivy leaf extract syrup significantly reduced coughing (Wiad Lek 2020;73(4):668-673O).
The latest word on ivy leaf comes from a meta-analysis of 2 double-blind studies. Both studies used 15 mL of ivy leaf extract. Everyone in the studies was suffering from acute cough from any cause or from acute bronchitis. Put together, the meta-analysis included 386 people.
For Bronchitis Severity Score, there was a significantly greater improvement in the ivy leaf group compared to placebo. There was also a significantly greater improvement for self assessment of cough severity in the ivy leaf group. Cough intensity and frequency was significantly superior in the ivy leaf group.
At the end of the 7 day studies, 81.1% of the ivy leaf group reported feeling well or very well versus 45% of the placebo group.
There were no serious adverse events.
This meta-analysis supports the evidence that ivy leaf extract improves the intensity and frequency of coughing and aids in recovery from acute respiratory infections.
