A Healthy Diet: As Good for Your Mind as it is for Your Body

This important study set out to determine the relationship between your diet and your brain. It wanted to see if there was an association between eating healthily and preventing cognitive decline as we age. It followed 27,860 people who were 55 or older and who were at risk of cardiovascular disease for 56 months. The study included people from 40 different countries . . .

For this study, the more fruit, vegetables, nuts, soy and fish you ate, the healthier your diet scored; the more red meat you ate, the unhealthier your diet scored. The researchers found that a healthy diet is as good for your brain as it is known to be for your body. People in the top fifth for healthiest diets had 24% lower risk of cognitive decline according to the Mini-Mental State Examination than people with the unhealthiest diets.
