A Novel Approach to Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Of all the many disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common, affecting as many as 15% of all people. That’s a lot of people who need help from this painful and uncomfortable condition. And a lot of help may be on the way.
The most important treatment for IBS is peppermint oil. But more hope may be on the way.
The first clue was a 2015 study that found that vitamin D deficiency was common in people with IBS. The study compared 60 people with IBS to 100 people without. 82% of the IBS people were deficient in vitamin D compared to 31% of people who did not suffer from IBS. The difference in their levels of vitamin D was significant (Oman Med J 2015;30(2): 115–118).
That left the obvious question of whether supplementing with vitamin D could help. The answer took three years to come. But it finally came, and the answer is yes!
The study gave 112 adolescents with IBS either a placebo or 2000IU of vitamin D a day for six months. The results were encouraging. The kids given the vitamin D had significantly improved on the irritable bowel severity score system compared to the kids given the placebo. They also had significant improvement in IBS quality of life and total scores.
