The Relationship of Vitamin D & Diabetes
Diabetes is becoming more and more common. There may be many reasons, including our poor diet, our inactive lifestyle and obesity. But recent evidence is also suggesting that vitamin D deficiency could be contributing. This new meta-analysis tested that suggestion.
The meta-analysis included 54 studies and 38,016 type 2 diabetics. It found that 64.2% of type 2 diabetics were deficient in vitamin D.
The data also showed that type 2 diabetics with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to have poor glycemic control and high blood pressure. Type 2 diabetics who are overweight or who have unhealthy cholesterol are significantly more likely to be deficient in vitamin D. Diabetics suffering from diabetic neuropathy or retinopathy are also more likely to have vitamin D deficiency.
Another just published meta-analysis of 18 studies found that, since low vitamin D could be part of the problem, correcting the low vitamin D could be part of the solution. It found that giving vitamin D to diabetics significantly improved insulin resistance and blood glucose (Sci Rep. 2023;13:12343).
