New Natural Help for Autism

Rates of autism are increasing and now affect about 2% of children. A new study is pointing to a novel natural treatment that could help all those kids.
Children with autism spectrum disorder find social interaction and communication challenging. They suffer from limited interests and atypical, repetitive behaviour.
There is no firmly established understanding of what causes autism, but oxidative stress and low levels of glutathione are thought to play a role. N-acetylcysteine, or NAC, can help correct both because it is an antioxidant and because it increases levels of glutathione. A number of studies have shown that NAC improves irritability in kids with autism.
21 autistic children between the ages of 3 and 6 were given either a placebo or NAC for 8 weeks. Children under 15kg took 200mg twice a day; children over 15kg took 300mg twice a day.
Taking NAC led to statistically greater improvement on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) compared to placebo. There was also statistically greater improvement irritability, hyperactivity and stereotypic behaviour.
This study offers hope of a safe, affordable natural supplement that helps many of the important symptoms of autism spectrum disorder.
