Little Discussed Flavonoid Improves Diabetes

This common but little discussed flavonoid can help improve diabetes and quality of life in type 2 diabetics.

Rutin is a common and easily available flavonoid antioxidant that is rarely talked about. It is naturally found in foods and drinks like buckwheat, green tea, citrus fruits, apples and grapes and easily found in supplements.

This study set out to see, perhaps for the first time, if supplementing rutin could benefit people with type 2 diabetes.

The study was double-blind and included 50 diabetics. Half were given a placebo for 3 months, and half were given 500mg of rutin.

Compared to the placebo, the rutin significantly improved systolic and diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure and heart rate. It also increased the body’s own glutathione and SOD antioxidants. This finding is important because free radical damage is a key factor in diabetes and its complications.

Supplementing rutin also led to significant improvements in emotional quality of life compared to placebo.

This study shows that taking rutin can improve blood pressure, antioxidant status and quality of life in people with type 2 diabetes.
