Legume Fiber Helps Manage Appetite & Improve Weight Loss
It is well-known that increasing or supplementing fiber can play an effective role in weight management. It is also known—though less well-known—
The new double-blind study included 88 overweight adults. They were given a tea containing either 6, 12, or 18 grams of a fiber derived from legumes (α-galacto-oligosaccharides) or a placebo for 2 weeks. The legume fiber was a prebiotic, meaning that it would be expected to feed and increase beneficial probiotics.
The people who got the legume fiber instead of the placebo had a statistically significant decrease in appetite, food intake and in markers of inflammation. The higher the dose of fiber they got, the greater the effect.
The fiber led to a statistically significant growth of probiotic bifidobacterial compared to the placebo group, and the researchers believed that changes in gut bacteria may have been largely responsible for the benefits.
