Hibiscus Beats Drugs for High Blood Pressure
It may seem surprising that something as gentle as hibiscus tea could have the power to beat pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of high blood pressure. But studies prove that it’s true. . . .
The latest study compared hibiscus tea both to a placebo and to the high blood pressure drug hydrochlorothiazide. Seventy-five people with mild to moderate high blood pressure were given either a placebo, 25mg of hydrochlorothiazide or a cup of hibiscus tea made from 20g of hibiscus that was standardized to contain 10.01mg of anthocyanins.
At the end of the four week study, both the herbal treatment and the drug treatment decreased systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure more than the placebo did. Impressively, the decreases for all three measures were superior to the drug in the hibiscus group. In the hibiscus group, systolic pressure decreased by a significant 17.08mmHg and the diastolic by a significant 11.12mmHg.
This is not the first study to show that hibiscus tea is more powerful than a drug for high blood pressure. In an earlier study, hibiscus was more effective than the ace inhibitor captopril (Phytomed 2004;11:375-82).
