Grapes: It’s Time They Got the Respect They Deserve

Lots of foods get lots of respect. Some even earn the label of superfood. Grapes have never been among them. But maybe they should be.

A new article argues that “based on actual scientific data, grapes have earned what should be a prominent position in the superfood family.”

The article was written by a prominent expert in resveratrol and cancer. Resveratrol is a plant compound similar to flavonoids. It is found primarily in the skin of grapes and mulberries as well as in dark chocolate and peanuts.

Grapes are rich in antioxidants, including powerhouses like anthocyanidins and resveratrol. Although grapes receive a lot less attention than blueberries, cherries and cranberries, while no one was paying attention, over 60 studies have been published on grapes. Those studies have shown that grapes have cardiovascular benefits, including relaxing blood vessels, improving circulation and improving cholesterol levels.

Grapes are also good for cognition. A systematic review of studies found that grapes improve executive function, processing speed, and spatial memory (Nutr Rev. 2022 Feb 10;80(3):367-380).

Grapes also protect your skin from the sun and improve the gut microbiome. They are also good for your eyes.

So, next time you reach for a bunch of grapes, remember that you are about to eat a superfood!
