Ginkgo Helps Angina
A systematic review of studies published in China has revealed that Ginkgo biloba, along with its many other uses, may be a useful herb for angina. . . .
We often don’t get to hear enough about Chinese studies, because when reviewers are searching for studies to include in systematic reviews and meta-analysis, they often cannot translate the Chinese studies, so they get left out.
This systematic review looked only at studies on Ginkgo biloba and angina conducted in China. Angina is caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart and is experienced as chest pain, often spreading through the arms, shoulder and neck.
Some of the studies compared ginkgo to drugs and some compared the combination of ginkgo and a drug to the drug alone. It was sometimes a bit confusing figuring out how many studies there were in each section, but the results went something like this! . . .
Four out of ten studies found a significant improvement in angina relief. Seven reported significant improvements on ECG. One out of one found significant improvement in the important ejaction fraction and in cardiac index. Two out of two reported significant improvement in stroke volume and one out of two found significant improvement in cardiac output, or the amount of blood pumped by the heart.
Put together, although not all of the studies were of very good quality, this review introduces the possibility that ginkgo, so helpful in other circulatory conditions, may also by useful for angina.
