For Menopausal Women, a Herb that Builds Your Bones

Osteoporosis is a risk after menopause. Taking this herb could help.
After menopause, women are at greater risk of osteoporosis with 30%-40% of menopausal women being affected in the US and Europe.
The herb hops is a rich source of safe plant estrogens. A new study gave 100 postmenopausal women with osteopenia calcium and vitamin D with the addition of either a placebo or 100mg of hops extract standardized for 8-prenylnaringenin for 48 weeks.
The addition of hops significantly increased bone mineral density. An improvement in physical functioning score also shows that supplementing hops improved the women’s ability to perform daily activities.
This is the first controlled study to show that hops improves bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with osteopenia.
