Folic Acid Prevents Strokes
Folic acid is a very important vitamin for a number of reasons. One of them is that it is probably the most important nutrient for controlling homocysteine, a dangerous compound that is linked to atherosclerosis. In what is being hailed by experts as an important study, folic acid has now been shown to benefit heart health. . . .
In a huge double-blind study, 20,702 people with high blood pressure but no history of heart attack or stroke were given either 10mg of the ACE-inhibitor enalapril alone or in combination with .8mg of folic acid for 4.5 years.
The addition of the folic acid significantly recuced the risk of a first stroke by 21%. It also significantly reduced the risk of a first ischemic stroke and of combined cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke and death from a cardiovascular even.
