Chokeberry: Evidence Mounting for a New Blood Pressure Herb
Several herbs that have been demonstrated to help high blood pressure are rich in flavonoid anthocyanins or proanthocyanidins, like hawthorn berries and pine bark extract. Several studies have also shown that anthocyanin rich berries, like blueberries, cranberries and purple grapes, help prevent and treat high blood pressure (see Vol. 18, No. 6 of The Natura Path).
Another little-known berry that is rich is anthocyanins is chokeberry. This little know relative of the rose has now also been shown to help high blood pressure. . . .
This single-blind study of 38 people with mild high blood pressure gave them 300mL a day of 100% chokeberry juice, 3g a day of chokeberry powder, and a placebo for 8 weeks each. The daily dose of chokeberry was prepared from approximately 336g of fresh chokeberries.
16 weeks of chokeberry supplementation decreased daytime ambulatory diastolic blood pressure by a significant 1.64 mm Hg. Ambulatory blood pressure measures blood pressure at regular intervals. Measures of low-grade inflammation also decreased significantly.
This study interests us because it is the second time in a year we have reported on a study that found this still unheard of herb benefits blood pressure. In fact, there are now Subscribe!
