Black Seed: The Little Seed that Helps Cholesterol and Diabetes

Recently, in volume 20, number 9 of The Natural Path, we did a review of black seed, a remarkable new supplement that is finally starting to get the attention it deserves. Among the many uses of black seed that we discussed, two important ones were diabetes and cholesterol. Now, researchers have conducted a systematic review of black seed that confirms these uses.
The review included 18 studies. Some of the studies used black seed extract, some used black seed oil and some used black seed powder. Different doses were used, and some studies were as short as 2 weeks, while others were as long as 6 months.
Ten out of 14 studies found that black seed has a significant effect on total cholesterol. Eleven out of 14 found that it significantly improved the bad LDL cholesterol. Black seed helped raise the good HDL cholesterol in 6 studies, but it didn’t help in 10.
When it came to blood sugar, 13 out of 16 studies showed that black seed significantly improves blood sugar. All 4 studies that looked at glycosylated hemoglobin found significant improvement with black seed. This unanimous finding is crucial because glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is the most important marker of long term blood sugar and diabetes control.
This systematic review shows that black seed significantly helps cholesterol and diabetes. It did not find convincing benefit for triglycerides or blood pressure. Black seed helped triglycerides in 7 out of 17 studies and blood pressure in 4 out of 9.
A difficulty with assessing the negative results in this review is that it is not clear if the negative studies were the short ones or if they were the ones that used a less effective form of black seed for that condition. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 controlled studies (which is better than just a systematic review) found that black seed significantly improves total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides (Pharmacol Res 2016;106:37-50).
As for blood pressure, another systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 controlled studies concluded that black seed does reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly more than in control groups (J Hypertens 2016;34(11):2127-35).
So, overall, the evidence seems strong that black seed helps total and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, blood sugar and long term markers of blood sugar and diabetes control. That’s a lot for this little, traditional remedy.
