Black Cumin Seed: New Help for Asthmatics
Black seed, or black cumin seed (Nigella sativa) are little discussed, but the research on them is growing impressively. Black seed is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune modulating. That makes these seeds interesting candidates for helping with asthma. . . .
Recently, researchers put that possibility to the test. 76 people with asthma participated in this single-blind, placebo-controlled study. Everyone in the study had their asthma partially under control with the use of inhaled corticosteroids. Half of them added a placebo to their asthma medication and the other half added either 1 or 2g of ground black cumin seeds each day for 12 weeks.
At both 6 weeks and at the end of the study at 12 weeks, both black cumin seed doses led to significantly improved scores on the Asthma Control Test compared to the placebo. Spirometry tests that measure how well the lungs are working by measuring how much you inhale and exhale were significantly improved in the 2g black cumin seed group. Both black cumin seed doses also led to significant improvement on tests of peak expiratory flow, which measures how well your lungs exhale air and is used to help diagnose and measure asthma.
This study shows, then, that black cumin seed improves asthma when added to inhaled corticosteroids.
