Best Evidence Yet: Folic Acid Helps Prevent Colon Cancer

This just published study may be the biggest study ever of folic acid and colorectal cancer. What it found will excite you!
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world and the second leading cause of cancer death. Given the location of this cancer, it should not be surprising that diet can play a clear preventative role. This study shows that folate in your diet and folic acid as a supplement can help prevent colorectal cancer.
The study was huge. It included 72,886 people pooled from 51 different studies. It found that dietary folate reduced the risk of colorectal cancer by 7% and combined dietary and supplemental folic acid reduced it by 9% for each quartile of intake. It found an 18% reduction in risk for people who take folic acid supplements compared to people who don’t.
This huge study suggests that simply getting more folic acid in your diet and supplements can help reduce the risk of colon cancer.
