A New Use of Dark Chocolate: Super Food Helps Fatty Liver
Dark chocolate has so many beneficial uses that this delicious food may be becoming one of the most important super foods. Dark chocolate helps everything from cholesterol and blood pressure to diabetes and cognition and more. And now a new study has discovered that dark chocolate also helps fatty liver. . . .
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is inflammation in the liver caused by a buildup of fat. It is an advanced type of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. As in so many other conditions, free radical damage plays an important role in the progression from simple fatty liver to NASH.
This single-blind study gave either 20g of dark chocolate or 20g of a placebo milk chocolate twice a day to 19 people with NASH. The dark chocolate was 85% or more cocoa and the milk chocolate was 35% cocoa or less. When the researchers measured a marker of free radical damage, they found that it was significantly reduced only in the dark chocolate group. The reduction is important because an increase in this marker of free radical damage is associated with degree of fatty liver. In the dark chocolate group, but not in the milk chocolate group, there was also a significant decrease in liver cell death.
This study provides the first evidence that dark chocolate can improve NASH.
